Yikes. One cure is probably to get staff involved in the bottom line somehow - equity ownership, awareness of balance sheet for the local store - as well as hiring strongly ethical people.

But hiring decent, ethical people to a low paid low status job requires flexibility somewhere else; flexibility on working hours, on pay, on human factors (do US stores require checkout assistants to stand all the time? that would be outrageous in europe).
