Subject: Re: California Raids
That aside there are no words that will defuse that paranoia.
Right. The proof will be in the pudding. The actions of ICE will let us know what is really going on.
Are they rounding up everyone with a Mexican name or a Mexican look?
Are they going to the employer and asking to examine the employer's records that are supposed to show documentation that each employee provided some proof of their right to work in the US? And then maybe using that information to decide who to detain.
How many citizens or legal residents are being caught up in proportion to the numbers of those found to be here illegally? How long is it taking to sort them out?
How many errors are being made - both legal folks being incorrectly detained and those here illegally being let go?
Are employers being punished for hiring people who do not have the right to work in the US? (If you go to a farm and find that half the workers do not have the right to work in the US, that tells me something is wrong in the employer's hiring practices and that they need to be penalized as well.)
Are the raids happening in a somewhat even manner? (Like the concern that raids could happen in CA but not in TX even though there are likely plenty of potential targets in both states.)
Lots of questions and concerns. No answers yet. But we should be able to get those answers in due course. And if that data is not being kept or is being unduly withheld, well, that tells us something, too.
