Subject: OT: MRNA
At the old Fool boards, we had a running thread about Moderna, famous for their Covid vaccine. While far from a classic value stock, they did earn massive amounts from the vaccine to the point that their PE dropped below 5 for extended periods last year, so I thought it somewhat appropriate to start the thread on this value oriented board.
Covid vaccine sales are in the process of rapidly contracting, so their current low PE of ~7 is going to be climbing dramatically in the coming year, however the stock has perked up from lows below $120/share all the way above $200 recently on the strength of positive results reported about vaccines in their pipeline to protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and to boost cancer chemotherapy effectiveness.
The cancer vaccine boosts a Merck chemotherapy and early results in melanoma patients have been highly encouraging. If the vaccine proves safe and effective in more advanced testing, then it could significantly reduce mortality and relapse among melanoma patients and a multitude of other cancer patients who currently use the Merck chemo.
RSV is a respiratory virus which can be very serious or fatal among the very young and old. There's currently no vaccine, though others are in the race to provide one, and Pfizer has already submitted an application for approval of theirs. Moderna just reported preliminary results and will be applying in the first half of 2023. What is exciting about their results is a better effectiveness at preventing 2 or more symptoms of the disease, ~84%, compared to Pfizer's ~67% efficacy.
I just posted an initial message to Shrewdom's MRNA board, and I welcome others to join me there, or in this thread, to discuss. https://www.shrewdm.com/MB?pid...
