Help a brother out here. What taxes do states collect that aren't collected by private firms? Serious question.

Also I have some familiarity will military bases…the example made me chuckle.

What I take away from the past couple of decades is that we need to get back to a stronger form of Federalism. Let California be Cali and Texas be Texas and get the Federal government back to focusing on the glue piece. National defense, interstate commerce etc. I’m happy to pay for interstate highways, Federal aviation stuff etc… but why is anyone not from California paying for their rail boondoggle…and I expect nothing from California on local stuff in my state. (For example)
