The donor base isn't homogeneous. The last few races have featured a "progressive lane" and a "centrist lane" among the multi-way candidates, and there's a ton of Democratic donor money that favors the "centrist lane" candidates.

Beshear's bigger obstacle will be building up national connections from a (relatively) small state governorship. That will put him at a disadvantage compared to other possible centrist lane candidates, like Whitmer or Klobuchar or Emmanuel (or, weirdly enough, Newsom seems to be trying to triangulate himself into that category).
