I feel like you're smart enough to know this already, but just in case: those "free" things that you buy with points aren't actually "free". You're still paying for them, just in a different sequence.

To illustrate: would you rather buy 10 cups of coffee for $2 apiece (none "free"), or buy 9 cups of coffee for $3 apiece, accumulating points along the way and getting the 10th cup for "free"?
