Subject: Re: Mismatching Strategy / Funding to Reality
As a follow-up to the drones, I'm remembering a mediocre movie (don't even remember the title, it was just some escapism) in which drones were used for an attack against POTUS. It was a swarm of small explosive drones, launched out of the back of a van or truck. I remember thinking at the time that it would be difficult to control a swarm like that...you wouldn't have 1 pilot for 1 drone. I don't even recall if they addressed how tracking and targeting would be accomplished.
I look back on that and wonder if it was prophetic. Drones are a significant force on the battlefield in Ukraine, the Houthis are using them in the Red Sea, and Iran used at least some on their recent attack on Israel. Those are just onesy-twosy. Imagine 100 cheap kamikaze drones. Secret Service couldn't protect POTUS from that, ships probably couldn't repel a swarm like that, it would render conventional tactics on a battlefield useless (as it already is, to some extent...you can't stick your head up or a drone will kill you or call in a strike against you).
You don't even have to be a state actor to do it. An individual was some moderate assets (like almost anyone on this board) could probably put together 100 drones. If that individual had access to explosives (or know-how to make them), and a bit of tech for targeting...wow.
