As has been stated, respect is earned. Even if you're the President. He has not earned it, and he has not given it. The two tend to go hand in hand.

Character matters for sure but not exclusively.

Results, achieved legally, matter more, especially by a president. Respect is different than admiration, and can be earned by means other than being a swell guy. In many situations, I don't particularly like Trump's abrasive style, but I still can and do respect his accomplishments for what they do to advance US security and prosperity.
