Masks can work to slow the spread by stopping infected patients from spreading droplets (via respiration and sneezing) to others.

That is the definition of the mask working.

Masks reduce the amount of droplets broadcasted from an infected person
AND
Masks reduce the viral load to which a masked person may be exposed.

Of course, in an environment where ideologues staunchly refuse to mask in large groups, the data on transmission will be skewed by the spreaders within an otherwise masked community. Example, Christians in Huntington Beach, CA (Nazi Capital of California)insisted on having large anti-mask revivalist meetings with more hugging and singing than normal... just to demonstrate they will not be influenced by communist/fascist/liberals and other ungodly influences .
