Not on the home islands, no. But we did have massive troop engagements with them all over the Pacific. It's not like we didn't engage in ground fighting with them.

By Aug 1945, their navy was obliterated. Their army was obliterated. Their air force was annihilated. They lost almost all their forces, nearly all their captured territories. They were done.

But they still didn't surrender. Aug 6, we dropped Little Boy. And they still wouldn't surrender (the Emperor wanted to, but his generals started to revolt, so he backed off). Fat Man was dropped on Aug 9. They surrendered shortly after that. Tokyo was ash due to fire bombing (conventional), but it took two nukes to force the surrender.
