One thing worrying me is that Venezuela might be an example. Budding BOlivarian socialist country slides into authoritarian oligarchy, and in the slide nationalizes one of our companies assets. We sanction the hell out of an economy gone south, creating a situation where Venezuelan asylees flood our border. We indirectly and directly are the cause of the flood. Have sanctions ever worked to make a country more democratic? We lifted the sanctions as a carrot for freer elections - didn't work.
Maybe we ought to rethink making our borders look really attractive and make policies like safe third country real.
