So when I want to recommend a post from an author, it seems to recommends every reply in the thread. Even if I might disagree with one or more replies by another author in the thread. That doesn't sound right to me, but still stumbling around a MUCH more familiar site so I could be overlooking somewhere?

That would be crazy, I agree. However I rather sure it is okay, and just the other posts were already recommended by someone else. You can test by recommending one of the other posts, and it should move up +1 point if you had not recommended it before.

When viewing a post as 'Whole Thread (4)' the 'Recommend' links appear against each individual post. When you click 'Recommend' it only recommends that one single post that the link is next to.
