Dunning Kruger is overrated.

It should also be noted that in the original Dunning Kruger study, the premise was that the highly knowledgeable would also underestimate themselves relative to their peers. The highly knowledgeable overestimated how much other people understood about a subject. They assumed that since they understood the basics, others did as well. Originally the Dunning Kruger effect worked both ways (the incompetent overestimating themselves and the highly skilled underestimating themselves). Neither is true.

Now Dunning Kruger is just an internet meme, and artifact that doesn't tell the whole story.
