To be clear, the United States remains an unusually pious nation by the standards of the rich world. Pew reports that 63 percent of American adults identify as Christian ' but that's down from 78 percent in 2007. A variety of factors are at work, including the view that "the church" is a scandal (e.g. pedophilia, intolerance of diversity -e.g. gays-, etc). I also suspect the internet has some influence. There's a reason people say "the Internet: where religions go to die". On the old TMF board, a few folks that showed up to Atheist Fools to convert the heathen were instead converted to disbelief.
