[German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz urged US leadership to help end the [Ukraine/Russian] war, citing the D-Day anniversary and America's historic role in liberating Europe.

"May I remind you that we are having June 6 tomorrow. This is D-Day anniversary when the Americans once ended a war in Europe," Merz said.

“That was not a pleasant day for you," Trump quipped.

“No, that was not a pleasant ... Well, in the long run, Mr President, this was the liberation of my country from the Nazi dictatorship," the Chancellor replied.

"That's true," Trump said.
