Yes, this is very important. But also note that many modern dishwashers have upper racks that can be raised or lowered as necessary.

That's a good idea! But if you have really oversized dinnerware, then they won't fit in any dishwasher because they're all pretty much the same (they have to fit in roughly a 24x24x28 space).
