Johnson is wrong in the first sentence. They aren't "illegals". They are asylum applicants. Nothing illegal about that, as albaby has explained exhaustively.

The work permits were one of two options to get people off of assistance, the other being funding more courts and judges. I'll take either one.

I agree with the other poster that any change by Congress is likely to be an improvement. I'm sure it has stuff both sides don't like, but that's the nature of compromise to address a problem. The fact that they are negotiating is a huge improvement. Likely both extremes are stamping their feet and holding their breath, but the right extreme seems to have outsized power in these things.
