I think Warren wants the family control of BRK's culture and voting control to continue as long as possible. Devoting what shares he has remaining when he passes to his children's control - whereby ending the Gates Foundation contributions - is the surest way to do do. No further dilution.

He's not backing away from his promises after his first wife passed. He's just ending it when they're kept.

As an aside, I raised the question with friends if this might permit removing purchases of Microsoft from the "forbidden" list? Buffett did so because, like Caesars wife, he wanted to be "above suspicion" in terms of not profiting from any inside info from Bill Gates.

The feedback I got is - not now. That might instead happen after Warren passes.

I can understand Warren's position. But MST could have been a large and rewarding investment over the years had Warren not been so concerned about any hint of such. That's part of having WEB as CEO.
