President Donald Trump has suspended a proposed $14bn arms sale to Taiwan, positioning the package as a bargaining tool in negotiations with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and warning Taipei against pursuing independence.

In an interview with the right wing Fox News after his visit last week to Beijing, Trump said the deal remained under review and had not yet been approved. The 79-year-old indicated it was being held back pending developments in relations with China, describing it as a significant lever given the scale of the weapons involved.
