The very first time I traveled to a foreign country (Mexico), I was a teen.

When I was in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, armed troops all over the place. In Israel especially. Soldiers travel on public transit with their weapons. No big deal. What I did not like was NOT seeing the military presence where you would expect it to be. Innocent civilians died in two separate attacks. When that access was cut off, no more attacks.
