It isn't out of the question to have rich text, but in the broad history a lot of the community likes the lack of noise and text orientation in the culture. The editor would become clumsy, formats between posts would be inconsistent with some wanting their font larger, etc, and other chaos.
You can already add bold tags, italics tags and to show formatted tables of figures, pre tags. It is technically so called 'rich text' already, except most of the html instructions are explicitly filtered out.
