I've heard (which is to say it's an unconfirmed rumor), that the guy is basically the victim of a paperwork snafu. He had his license suspended, then did what was needed to restore his license. But that information didn't get into the right databases, specifically the one the police and courts use. So he ended up with this current charge for driving while suspended. He fully believed his license was good and intended to prove that in this case we're watching.

Still, it's never a good idea to zoom into your court case while driving. And all made worse by the optics of the case being a driving while suspended case.
