I read that it is as likely that she was raped by a Roman soldier as anything else. As occupying armies sometimes do.

Given the "purity" expectations of the time, it would have been better to say "I don't know how this happened, I'm still a virgin", than to claim rape (or that she found some stable boy really hot).
