Just curious. I heard it was a bolt action hunting type rifle, which often is used with a scope, but haven't heard any more details about caliber, etc.

The gun authorities say was used to assassinate Charlie Kirk was a Mauser 98, a common bolt-action rifle typically used for hunting.
The gun is a popular rifle used to hunt bigger game and has a markedly different design and function than the modern semiautomatic assault rifles that have made headlines in high-profile mass shootings. The hunting rifle, which had a heavier .30-06 caliber, dates back decades as German-made military surplus with millions produced and resold in the United States, experts told USA TODAY.
Authorities say the shooter used a rifle
with a mounted scope to strike Kirk in the neck. The shooter may have been less than 150 yards from Kirk, according to a USA TODAY analysis of satellite imagery.

Strangely, as a boy, I learned to shoot on an old Mauser my father brought back from Europe in 1945.
Iron sights, no scope. Chambered for 7mm, not 30.06.

My brother had one that had iron sites 30.06. Wonder if he still has it.

Thanks. They're still being sold - $14,000 and up! That seems like an awful lot for a rifle. Why are these so expensive? Is it only the 125 anniversary models?

The ones I see are $350 to $400 to $2000.

My Uncle had one in 30.06 for deer hunting.

As a boy I recall seeing & handling them on a floor rack at Big 5 Sporting goods... not an elevated rack behind a counter as they are now.

I see used Mauser 98s for sale on guns.com for $400 to $2000 depending on condition. It looks like the only new ones being made currently are those $12,000+ variants.

From the internet: "In the first video we saw of Robinson, he was limping in a neighborhood on his way to the rooftop. That's probably because he had the rifle placed down his leg, forcing him to limp. That makes sense.
The next video clip we see of him, however, Robinson is running along the rooftop, with no limp. Since he didn't leave the weapon on the rooftop, he must have disassembled it and put it in his backpack. Again, that would make sense.
But, when the weapon was discovered in the woods, it had been completely reassembled. That doesn't make sense.
If he was trying to make his getaway, which he was, why would he take the time to reassemble the weapon? That doesn't seem logical to me, does it to you?
Not to be conspiratorial, but something doesn't smell right about this."
But who nose?

Nah. Nobody’s going to take the time to disassemble it; you’re going to run like hell to get out of Dodge.
Probably he just threw it off the roof and picked it up on his way to the woods. That also answers the “he reassembled it later” thing.
I can’t figure out why he would leave it in the woods for others to find later. There has to be DNA on it, maybe it’s registered, maybe somebody else has seen him with it in the past. Obviously he doesn’t watch enough episodes of Forensic Files to be educated in the many and various ways the police have of finding you - and bragging about it, well that’s just the stupidest.
