'Mayor Adams Predicts Migrant Crisis 'Will Destroy New York City''
Snip
'Mayor Eric Adams issued his most dire warning yet about the consequences of the migrant crisis in the Big Apple on Wednesday, telling New Yorkers that the ongoing influx 'will destroy New York City.'
New York City has received more than 100,000 illegal immigrants since the spring, when border states began busing migrants to blue 'sanctuary cities' which have committed to providing shelter and social services to all individuals regardless of immigration status. At a town hall meeting in Manhattan, Adams said New York City is receiving 10,000 migrants per month.'

Your Fascism is showing...
"Fascism is a cult of the leader, who promises national restoration in the face of supposed humiliation by immigrants,
leftists, liberals, minorities, homosexuals, women, in the face of what the fascist leader says is a takeover of the country's media,
cultural institutions, and schools by these forces. Fascist movements typically, rest on an urban/rural divide.
The cities are where there's decadence, where the elites congregate, where there's immigrants, and where there's criminality.
You have to worry when they're seeing the other as less than. Those moments are the times when societies need to worry about fascism."

Mayor Adams does not want the immigrants in NYC. He said the immigrants are ruining NYC.
Mayor Adams has not said that "the immigrants" are "ruining" the city. He has said that the enormous number of immigrants are straining the city's resources, and that help is needed to provide what they need.
There are no reports of immigrants involved in crimes of any sort. No reports of immigrants abusing the city or those of us who live here in any way. Please put your gloating on hold.

Do you prefer "destroying" the city ?
What was ACTUALLY said....if you'd take a moment to stop gloating and open your eyes.....
The headline: "In Escalation, Adams Says Migrant Crisis 'Will Destroy New York City'"
The subhead: "In provocative remarks at a town hall meeting, Mayor Eric Adams said that he did not 'see an ending' to the migrant crisis and renewed his push for federal help."
So it's NOT "the immigrants," but "the migrant CRISIS." And as I stated initially, it's the overwhelming numbers. And it's NOT "destroying" but "WILL destroy".....and what comes next makes it clear that the critical element is the strain on the city's resources, not the migrants themselves. Adams "renewed his push for federal help."

OMG. Step out of your bubble.
Here is the tale of Daniel Hernandez Martinez, a recent immigrant
Migrant arrested 6 times for 14 crimes in first two months in NYC
Daniel Hernandez Martinez, 29, arrived on June 27 and allegedly committed his first crime the following day.
'He's been wreaking havoc,' a cop with more than 20 years on the job said.
'This is not an isolated incident. These migrants are getting arrested quite often here, and we really don't know who they are. They really don't have ID. They're not being vetted properly, but some of them are committing some of the most violent crimes here.'
Immigrant Daniel Hernandez Martinez, 29, told cops he arrived from Venezuela on June 27 and allegedly committed his first crime the following day.
Martinez's alleged crime spree started at a Costco at 976 Third Ave. in Brooklyn. Martinez stole a jar of Nutella, slippers, sneakers, hats, Gillette razor blades, and Dove body wash. cops said. He was charged with petty larceny and released on his own recognizance.
On July 6 he allegedly hit a Duane Reade in Columbus Circle in Manhattan, this time stealing a 'tool kit.'
The next day he escalated from shoplifting to assault, cops said. A security guard at a Duane Reade on West 35th in Manhattan tried to stop him from pilfering a bag of chips and toothpaste.
He 'pulled out a large knife and advanced toward an undercover officer' while yelling unintelligibly, court documents show.
Martinez was charged with menacing this time, but again released on his own recognizance because the charge wasn't bail-eligible.

Here is another about that same hotel
Eric Adams (D) opened the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan to thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens, at least 41 have been arrested ' mostly for domestic violence.

All of the above is just a sample from just one city. And somehow you have heard of none of it, in any city, from any source? Unbelievable.

Not that Prof. Stanley is wrong, but - by that very definition - there's more than a whiff of fascism in the "narratives" about red state residents spun by left-leaning media and other "elites".
"We're right, you're wrong and dangerous and need to be put away / re-educated" is a mild description of the devolution coming from both sides.

Bothsidesism when we're gonna try a President for an attempted self coup?
While I'm sure we can convict Trump, I'm not sure at all that will change anything. We could still go authoritarian. Other countries are watching and making plans for if we go that route.

Ruining Destroying take your pick a distinction without a difference
". And it's NOT "destroying" but "WILL destroy"...."
Maybe that is why that is exactly what the title of this thread is ...duh
"critical element is the strain on the city's resources, not the migrants themselves."
This non-ending "crisis" is having a destroying effect on the city as it is an ongoing drain on the city resources according to Mayor Adams.

"Mayor Adams has not said that "the immigrants" are "ruining" the city. "
Do you prefer "destroying" the city ?I don't want either. And Mayor Adams.....who I did NOT vote for in the primary.....is not the sole perspective. But he makes sure that his voice is sufficiently loud and ubiquitous, and thus is constantly in the headlines. I'd be intensely interested in what the mayor's office would have been doing and saying all along if Kathryn Garcia (who lost to Adams by 1 percentage point) were our mayor. Her record demonstrates her remarkable and practical problem-solving vision and capabilities. (sigh)
"New York Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat on Friday said that for New York City to better manage the influx of migrants, cooler heads need to prevail.....'I'm not gonna sugarcoat this, I don't think they're gonna destroy the city. I just don't think that,' Espaillat told The Hill.
Many immigrant rights advocates and Democrats are biting their lip on Adams's comments, hoping to avoid further inflaming an issue at the top of the Republican agenda."
https://thehill.com/latino/4194844-new-york-democr...If you want to agree with Adams' pronouncement, that's your right. But just keep in mind that he may be the loudest voice for now, but he most certainly is not the only voice.

There's an excellent OpEd piece in today's NYTimes by Michael Bloomberg, ex-major of NYC.....and someone I had happily voted for.
I hope this piece isn't behind a paywall, and if it is that it's been reprinted elsewhere.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/10/opinion/michael...Here is the intro:
"Our long-broken immigration system has now become a full-blown crisis with the collapse of the asylum process. The Biden administration has failed to address the steep price many cities are paying for a system they didn't create and borders the cities don't control. The White House ought to recognize the political damage the crisis will do to Democrats up and down the ticket in 2024 if it doesn't take swift and decisive action.
The number of people seeking asylum at the southern border increased under President Donald Trump and has grown further under President Biden. The partial border wall has done nothing to slow the flow. Both parties created the problem, and both parties must work together to fix it."
And he doesn't just spout platitudes. He outlines the issues that must be addressed, and offers suggestions. Certainly good food for thought.

I think there is legitimate blamesharing to go around between Democrats and Republicans regarding immigration problems in the more specific realm of PROCESS related issues -- adequately funding the judiciary for the required number of immigration judges, funding the resources needed for temporary housing during processing, devising a better tracking system that makes permanent (intentional?) separation of children from parents impossible, etc.
However, it's likely both sides are failing to address the underlying economic issues across the hemisphere that are also driving these attempts at mass immigration. Except for a relatively few wanting to come to America for purely entepreneaurial reasons (to make it big in semiconductors, computers, the latest scientific wave...), MOST people don't willingly leave their homeland with nothing but the clothes on their back and whatever fits in a sack or a purse to come to a new country. No one is sleeping in until 10:00am every day in Caracas, Venezuela then suddenly saying "HEY, you know what would be great? Trekking across seven countries on foot, dodging a bunch of gun-toting nuts in Brownsville and trying to get into America to sleep on the street or score welfare benefits and sleep in at my cousin's."
That's NOT what is driving immigration.
Crime from drug cartels and collapsing economies and hyperinflation are triggering these immigration attempts. I know nothing about Venezuela's long-term political and economic history but I know the antagonism between the US and Venezuela has made it impossible to devise ways the two countries could alter the current situation to lessen the exodus. We certainly should be in a better position to work with Mexico to help them curtail more of it at THEIR southern border -- a MUCH SHORTER BORDER mind you -- rather than resorting to insane posturing like suggesting using US military in Mexico to block immigration into the United States. And obviously, solving our own drug problems in the US would do a great deal to eliminate the flow of dollars to drug cartels in Mexico whose violence and government corruption are triggering Mexicans themselves to flee to the US.
Very few in the public sphere seem to be communicating any ideas on these REAL underlying problems. Without solving the strategic problems, solving the practical problems will continue to be difficult, expensive and ultimately ineffective for all involved.

But....is there a solution? One that can be implemented within a relevant time frame?
One of my favorite quotes is, "Nothing is too hard, but many things are too fast." Even if it were possible for actions in the U.S. to "solve" the strategic problems, it might take too much time. The practical problems might be too current and too fast to address solely, or even primarily by addressing the strategic problems.
Whatever you may say about Gov. Abbott, his strategy has worked amazingly well. Another favorite quote - "the best way to get rid of a bad law is to enforce it strictly." So long as mostly the border states had to deal with the practical problems of very large numbers of migrants awaiting resolution of their asylum claims, there was no real political impetus to change the status quo. Now that other areas are being forced to also deal with those practical problems, the political dynamic is starting to shift.

The only thing I've seen is Biden doing mailings to some immigrants letting them know TPS is available. Anything other than that?
