Trump designated the Houthis as a terrorist group. Biden promptly took them off the list.

So naturally they've responded with dozens of attacks on US Navy ships and have damaged US-flagged merchant ships.

Now Biden is re-designating them as terrorists...sort of:

The specially designated global terrorists label to be reimposed on the Houthis does not include sanctions for providing “material support” and it does not come with travel bans that are also imposed with the foreign terrorist organization label, steps intended to help prevent the U.S. move from harming ordinary Yemenis.

It also doesn't have the full power of sanctions and other tools that a complete terror designator brings.

Oh, well. Maybe they'll sink a ship or 3 and that will be enough.

Right. Effective January 19, 2021, his last day in office.

That designation prevented food -- Yemen imports 90% of its food -- medicine (that COVID-19 thingy was a big global problem then) and humanitarian aid going to 24 million Yemenis living in the poorest country in the Arab world.

What a courageous act to trigger on his last day as president.

Quite like the Southern border, the Biden admin is not interested in preventing attacks but only reacting <half-assed> afterwards.

I can guarantee you, if any ship of the USN is fired upon, the CO of that ship will respond with every weapon at his disposal, regardless of any standing order or any task force order.

The task force commander is responsible for seeing that none of his assets are placed in a threat situation where they lack the capability to defend themselves.

Side Note: 'Lots' (ALL???) active ships of the fleet are equipped with the Phalanx defensive Gatling gun. Runs on auto, detects incoming, opens fire. Nick named 'R2D2', for its resemblance to the cute robot in the Star Wars movies. The very first issues of the Gatling concept were effectively deployed all the way back in "the war between the states".

Looks like indirect retaliation for the killing of Qasem Soleimani by Trump. We can handle it.
