Now, that was always a really bad bald faced lie given what Hunter has been up to,...

It might not be. I was just reading (NYT) that apparently Hunter was selling the illusion of access. He didn't actually have it, which means Joe wasn't complicit in any way. Hunter was using the name only. Which does not speak highly of Hunter. The more I hear/read, the less I think of him.
