For me, it's not about Republicans vs Democrats. It's about morals. I want my kids to have my moral values when it comes to integrity, compassion, and civility.
It bothers me profoundly that about a third of the country knows that this Trump character
- was found guilty of sexual assault and bragged about grabbing women by the ____
- made fun of a handicapped person
- bullies people by giving them nicknames that make fun of their height or appearance ("Little Marco", "Pencil Neck", etc)
- said soldiers and war heroes like McCain are suckers and losers
- bullies women he doesn't like by calling them fat, or saying "blood coming out of her everywhere")
- sees people chanting pro-Nazi slogans in Charlottesville and says they are good people
- a grand jury of his peers (ordinary US citizens like you and me) reviewed the evidence and found enough probable cause that he engaged in racketeering to overturn the election, stole top-secret classified documents that belong to the National Archives and refused to return them, and falsified business records to hide a payment he made to a porn star he had sex with while married. Sufficient probable cause that he was arrested and is now out on bail.
They know all the above, and yet they say "Yep, that's my guy".
If a Democratic candidate had done any of the above, I would never vote for them. Back in the 70s, Republicans in Congress did have a moral compass, and convinced Richard Nixon to resign when the Watergate evidence came out.
But the country's morals seem to have declined since then.
What can we do to boost people's morals in this country so they know that bullying is wrong, that sexual assault is wrong, that insulting our troops is wrong, that supporting pro-Nazi hate speech is wrong?
I think one way is to expand access to higher education and college for all. When you go to college, you get exposed to people from different backgrounds, and your thought processes are driven more by logic and science. Trump says he loves the "poorly educated". His support comes from that segment, and that segment doesn't seem to care that he refers to them as the "poorly educated". Whereas the college-educated people prefer Nikki Haley and Biden - besides learning new skills, college also gave them moral values like integrity, compassion and civility.

This response is so typical. A non-sensical, knee-jerk 5-word answer with no supporting facts.

The facts are well known about Biden, but keep denying them. That is your job to do as a liberal.

And isn't it funny (not) how these are the same people who claim to have a monopoly on "Christian values". Yeah, right. 😖

A minor quibble.
I think those people were always there, you just couldn't see them. They were hiding under rocks, with the internet their only outlet for their vileness (just look at the Yahoo message boards of old, or even YouTube comment sections). But Trump was "one of them", and he normalized thuggish and racist behavior, and so the thugs and racists came out from under their rocks because they thought their time had come. Their behavior and attitudes were acceptable. MAGA was born. It will take time for them to go back into hiding, but they will always be there.
Note: I am not referring to all Reps. Just the subset of MAGA. Many other Reps are complicit, even if they disapprove, because there is power in MAGA, and they were winning elections for a cycle or two. But it's a tiger that they can't control, and it's destroying them. And now they're (mostly) losing elections with Trump-endorsed candidates underperforming significantly.

The "facts" are only well-known in the fevered imaginations of people who have been misled by woefully inadequate sources of information.
I sort of pity those people, living in an alternate reality full of fear and loathing.
Unless you're referring to Hunter, in which case he does appear to be a problem child. And few liberals are denying that.

Lots of anger, frustration and hatred in that person. Not much thought.

Spoken like a pure elitist. Fine if you believe the only the college educated are smart enough to realize the evil that is Trump. OK by me, so we disagree.
But when you say this, besides learning new skills, college also gave them moral values like integrity, compassion and civility, you suggest the less educated lack integrity, compassion, and civility.
There are millions of hard working blue collar types who think your college educated smugness lacks compassion and civility. And further insult is knowing the tax dollars from these deplorables who went to work right out of high school are now paying off the student loans for the "elites" who went to college for four or six year but are now unemployable with a degree in basket weaving. You should be thanking the blue collars, not denigrating them.

No, I don’t think so. I would argue with the word “only.” Certainly some college educated are still for Trump. Certainly some who are *not* college educated have seen through the fog and are against him.
It is true that in general the higher up the education ladder you go the more the sentiment turns against Trump, but that does not mean the two camps are cleaved neatly in half.
PS: It’s not “smug” to note actual demographic trends and how they correlate with political views. It’s data and science. Although I recognize that even this simple statement will somehow be evidence to you of “smugness.”

Sorry, I wasn't clear, here was my ambiguous comment:
Fine if you believe the only the college educated are smart enough to realize the evil that is Trump. OK by me, so we disagree.
What I meant was I disagree that Trump is evil, not that most college educated skew blue and hate Trump.
Now, on to my comment on smugness. Lets start with recalling the post I was commenting on:
Whereas the college-educated people prefer Nikki Haley and Biden - besides learning new skills, college also gave them moral values like integrity, compassion and civility. - mechinv
There is nothing smug or unusual about liberals expressing their hatred of Trump is all sorts of creative ways. Ho hum. I think smugness (or elitism if you prefer) enters the picture when a supposition is made that a college education confers integrity, compassion, and civility with the implication these qualities are less prevalent in the non college educated population.

BHM: "Fine if you believe the only the college educated are smart enough to realize the evil that is Trump. OK by me, so we disagree.
Umpire: Strike one - he did not say 'only.'
"you suggest the less educated lack integrity, compassion, and civility."
Strike 2 - He did not say that either.
"You should be thanking the blue collars, not denigrating them."
Steeerike 3. - He wasn't denigrating 'the blue collars.' You extrapolated that from your first 2 strikes.

What I meant was I disagree that Trump is evil...
Wow. Setting aside discussions about what is "evil", is it an absolute, etc...in common parlance I don't see how one cannot conclude that Trump is evil. He has no regard for anyone but himself, the rules do not apply to him, he dismisses people who serve others (e.g. soldiers) as "suckers" and "losers", everyone appears to be a 'mark' to him, he would tank this country if he had something to gain...I could go on. He has no redeeming qualities that I have observed. None. Zero. The world will be a slightly better place when he's dead. And I don't say that lightly, or hyperbolically. He may not poison people with polonium, but I suspect that's because he hasn't figured out how to accomplish that. He would if he could. It is truly vital that he be kept out of any office, especially the Oval Office.
And, no, I don't think that about all Reps. In fact, very few of them. Most I take the attitude of "we can live through this" (like Dubya). He is just truly exceptional in his qualitative/quantitative awfulness and "evil". I would take any Rep candidate over him (Haley, Christie, even DeSantis...and I don't like any of them).
