1poorguy... is this getting any press in AZ? I couldn't see a state bill number (if it's even progressed that much).

It's too bad the Left's anti immigrant rhetoric is doing this.

First I've heard of that. But I looked it up, and it's real. HB 2842.

Of course, this is in a backdrop of pretty liberal gun laws. If someone is breaking into your home, you can shoot them. Doesn't matter if they are armed or not. As long as you can show they were breaking into your home, it's open season. It also used to be the case (though I don't know if it is still the case) that if you see someone with your TV in the street, you could shoot them. But...you better damn-well be able to prove it was your TV, or you're in a world of excrement. That law may or may not have changed in the past 30+ years.

https://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion/op-ed/laur...

It's not specifically aimed at migrants in its wording, but clearly it is in its intent. A rancher (if the bill becomes law) could shoot me (a very white guy) if I was trespassing on his land. Though he likely wouldn't.

The bill proposes a dramatic expansion of the state’s “Castle Doctrine” law, which allows you to use deadly force against someone who is breaking into your home.

HB 2842 would expand the permissible killing zone to anyone who sets foot on your land. All you’d have to do is say you were protecting yourself or someone else.

As someone who has spent a lot of time hiking and backpacking in AZ, it is not always obvious that you are on private property. If someone is going to use this law as an excuse to kill a trespasser they better damn well have their property clearly marked. Or would it just be "tough luck", ignorance of the law is no excuse.

So they want to expand the castle doctrine so you can shoot migrants crossing your property in the back. Then they can make a video game about it. And movies - THE PURGE - Immigration

Does this mean you can legally shoot and kill those pesky mormons and JW's at the front door?

I'm guessing, and hoping, this law won't get passed.

Evidently Kelly started shooting at a unarmed group of eight immigrants and killed one. He also wrote a self published novella about patrolling a ranch with his AK-47.

<snip>"Kimberly Hunley, chief deputy attorney for Santa Cruz County in the border city of Nogales, Arizona, made the assertion the same day the court made public a filing she made Tuesday asserting that rancher George Alan Kelly began shooting at the group “out of nowhere” on Jan. 30 without issuing a warning or a request to leave.

Kelly, 73, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of one of the people, identifed by the sheriff’s office as Gabriel Cuen-Butimea, who lived just south of the border in adjacent Nogales, Mexico. U.S. federal court records, which spell his last name slightly differently as Cuen-Buitimea, show he was convicted of illegal entry and deported back to Mexico several times, most recently in 2016.

Two more people from the group later came forward to law enforcement, prompting authorities this week to amend the complaint against Kelly to include two counts of aggravated assault “using a rifle, a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument” in a shooting at his ranch...

...Kelly apparently drew on his borderlands ranching life in a self-published novel, “Far Beyond the Border Fence,” which is described on Amazon.com as a “contemporary novel which brings the Mexican Border/Drug conflict into the 21st century.”

Authored by a man with the same name, the 57-page novel focuses on a man named George and his wife, Wanda, also the name of Kelly’s real-life wife.

“Several times each week illegal immigrants would cross the VMR ranch,” reads one part. “They were led by armed human smugglers called Coyotes. George and his foreman had to patrol the ranch daily, armed with AK-47′s.”<snip>

So he borderland romanticized himself into a first degree murder charge and gofundme style christian sites have gathered $300,000 plus for his defense.
