I got introduced somehow to the social contract theory and enjoyed thinking that way. But try explaining that to some folks and they look at you like you're diseased.

"The social contract theory states that individuals voluntarily give up some of their absolute freedom to a governing authority in exchange for the protection of their rights and the maintenance of social order. This "contract," often hypothetical, establishes the moral and political obligations between a society's members and its government, with legitimacy arising from the consent of the governed"

"I didn't consent to anything," they'll say.

"Yes, you did," I respond, "you turned 18 and didn't leave. You still have a choice to leave now, but if you choose to stay, then you live by the laws, and you consent to them by staying. Otherwise, you are free to find a country you like better, or to live remotely and not encounter society." (This is my own interpretation)
