The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Just watched an interview with Buttigieg where his apparent joy in the jobs he's done in public service came up. And he acknowledged that joy is a part of why he does what he does. He is not afraid to smile and be happy. Yes, leadership roles are serious and often difficult jobs. But that does not mean they have to be devoid of any joy and fun. I think it was either Buffet or Munger who said they [probably figuratively] skip to work every day because it's fun.

That may be Harris' secret weapon this time around. She is not afraid to express joy, to laugh, to have fun, to enjoy being with a group of people doing a job they like doing.

I've been a bit pessimistic this election cycle. That might be because there wasn't any joy coming from anywhere. Until this week, the campaigns have just been one group of angry people getting angry at another group of angry people. With Harris, joy seems to be returning in huge waves to the landscape. It's like a breath of fresh air. Like color returning to a black and white scene in a movie.

Ordinary folks have been unexcited about politics lately because there was no joy in politics, only fear and anger. (Could even explain the unexpected success of the movie Inside Out 2, which kind of shocked the industry with success - people needed a story that recognized there is a joy in life.) Harris is not afraid to express joy in life, to celebrate with people. And that is bringing people out of their caves and getting them interested in politics again.
