I might have to start reading the investment boards etc.

Wondering if this is an entry point OR something global cataclysmic is coming. I keep thinking that attacking Iran is a done deal.

Van Jones is one of the few democrats with a couple of brain cells to rub together. Fortunately nobody is listening to him:

https://www.foxnews.com/media/van-jones-warns-demo...

"Look, man, we’re screwed," Jones said on "CNN Newsroom" Sunday. "I mean, Democrats don’t know what to do. This is a nightmare. You know, somebody like Donald Trump, we thought we’d at least have Hakeem Jeffries in the Speaker’s chair to hold him back if we didn‘t have Kamala in there to do the right thing."

Hahahahahahahaha.

And then:
"Listen, the Democratic Party is going through a massive set of internal crises. You have a party that got trapped two ways," he said. "One, defending a broken status quo that nobody likes because they thought that Donald Trump was going to make it worse. But when you’re defending the status quo, you’re going to lose."

"And then offending most people in the country, calling everybody sexist and racist and transphobic and every other name, and then saying, ‘please follow us.’ That’s not a good strategy, folks.

Defending a broken status quo and offending most of the country, turns out, is not as popular as my party thought it was going to be. And so it’s going to take a while for people to get it figured out," Jones added.

Hate doesn't sell as well as they think it does. So while PA libs here and democrats there can cheer about having guys like us hung in the town square, The Normies see this and instantly know which party is filled with Cuckoobananas type people. Hint: It ain't ours.

The economy has been weak for a while; the stock market is finally deciding that a lot of the AI boom is meh in terms of making money outside of NVIDIA and that the Stronk Jobs Market was really the government hiring people to dig/fill in ditches.

There's a lot of rot that needs to fried out of the economy before it gets better. Gotta re-grow all the chickens Biden killed. Gotta bake out his inflation. Gotta stabilize housing prices at a lower level. Etc. Etc.

Only a buck? Well, I guess that depends on whether you're talking the S&P or penny stocks.

S&P is down ~4% in the last five days.

https://www.google.com/search?q=S%26P+500&sourceid...

YTD, it's down almost 5%.

Expect it to get worse. A trade war with China was bound to have some effect, but adding a trade war with our actual allies is much worse.

Several retailers are down 10% or more (including Costco, which I am long).

Glad I have a few years' worth of cash on hand.

Dope1: The economy has been weak for a while; the stock market is finally deciding that a lot of the AI boom is meh in terms of making money outside of NVIDIA and that the Stronk Jobs Market was really the government hiring people to dig/fill in ditches.

Gee, the federal government hired 16.6 million individuals? Where'd you get that nugget of wisdom... the Trump Cult newsletter?

Biden added jobs for 48 consecutive months, tying the second-longest period of employment expansion on record and was the first US president to oversee monthly job gains for the entirety of his presidency.

Biden took the unemployment rate from Trump's 6.4% and brought it down to 4.1%. The unemployment rate hit a nearly 54-year low of 3.4% in January 2023.

Real GDP growth and GDP per capita were both running at their fastest pace during a presidential administration transition since 2000.

From Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021, to January 16, 2025, the S&P 500 had a total return (including dividends) of 63.77%. Today, the Nasdaq is down 4.8% and the Dow is down 1100 points.

During the last two years of the Biden presidency, the S&P 500 posted its first back-to-back annual gains of over 20% since the late 1990s.

The number of uninsured Americans hit an all-time low of 7.2% in the second quarter of 2023, while the number of people who signed up for an Obamacare plan for 2024 surged to 21.3 million.

The consumer price index peaked at 9.1% in 2022 and fell to a rate of 3.1% in less than two years. In the 1970s, inflation took eight years and five months to drop to 3%.

Household net worth rose to a record $156.2 trillion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, from $131.4 trillion at the end of 2020.

Dope1: There's a lot of rot that needs to fried out of the economy before it gets better. Gotta re-grow all the chickens Biden killed. Gotta bake out his inflation.

"Re-grow" chickens Biden killed? Yeah, I understand Trump's going to build walls to protect them.

Inflation was 3.0% when Biden left the presidency, handing Trump a Goldilocks economy which he's destroying along with the federal government and our relationships with our allies.

He does love him some Putin, though.

The Trump cultists really are idiots.

VAN JONES is too Progressive for what the Left needs but - he is more realistic than the 401K'ers on this board.

Also, I feel is ok. If the country was a country, and true deals would be made - I feel he's a Liberal I could do political business with.

****

49 here, retired 4 years ago. The only reason I'd take risk is to buy nicer clothes or to take extra vacations. But - been there done that.

Now, all I want is nice hot diner meals, a nice trip a year (down from 2- grrrr), colleges for kids plus start-up comfort money for kids. So bottom line - if I earn an average of 5% nominal between now and croaking day ----I'd be ok. NOT what I SHOULD have been - but, hey, can't win em all.

BUT......bottom line I am in two stocks since retiring.

5% of total net worth was in BRK.B - that company isn't run by tattoo'd sideways hate Peloton asswipes. Old School business.

I put 5% of net worth in pure speculation: RYCEY Rolls Royce - -I think cost basis is $1.89. I mentioned it way back when on TMF or here. Sold 50% of it@ 9.72 recently. Figured I'll stick around a bit longer with the rest.

So when I complain about being down 10 cents or a buck or whatever it's RYCEY I was referring to.

Otherwise, I'm misty thinking of my 5% MMF's. But boring stuff like that --- plus the rents on Millennial Mayberry townhomes do the rest.

ANd Daddy gets the short rib special at the diner a couple times a week:)

I'm mostly cash - I looked at Jedi, Dope, and Trump and said we are ggoing to stumble ourselves into a recession with inflation.

We have not plumbed the depths of how bad Trump can make an economy yet. HHHHOOOOLLLLDDDD!

With investing, boring is good. I have a lot in index funds, some general MFs, and a few individual stocks. All of the mutual funds are in IRAs. The only stuff out of the IRA is the individual stocks. Plus a large cash cushion, funded in part by mom's demise (I just never bothered to reinvest it once I transferred it to my accounts). That money was supposed to be for her to live and have fun, but she never did after her BFF died. Then dementia, and her funds just supported her in memory care until the end.

You're smart retiring at 45. I did it at 59. Live it up while you can, because eventually you won't be able to. But that's straying far away from topic.

So happy for you!
I'm 53, need a couple of more years, but my countdown clock is getting really loud. I won't retire completely; just enough to get away from the stress and BS festival that is the tech industry. Current course and speed is to try to retire from the current place, then go get a job at a much smaller outfit -or- find something with a miniscule commute to work (there are some tech firms in Seattle I can walk or bike to, not bad). Then gradually shift off into the sunset with a few ideas for a YouTube channel and some teaching :).

I retired 11 years ago in July ‘15. Still living it up, though my definition of that has changed considerably.

No booze. More pills. I go for walks rather than runs. My wardrobe has changed. More Carhartt and less Brooks Brothers. And I sooo enjoy sleeping late and starting my day- not with a rush, but a slow cup of coffee.

In high school I learned so many things.

highlights - make your own money so you can go to Merlin's and have a cheeseburger, chile cheese fries with onions and a cherry coke anytime you want without begging parents for money.

Also, befriend the high school radio station manager, the custodians, (Both men are retired in Florida now - one works at Publix we chat often on Facebook lol ) and the rent a cops - - this way when you feel entitled to take all three lunches during the day they are your ally. If you decide to leave the closed campus for lunch, and a Limbaugh radio break----you could do so as much as you want and be busted ONCE in 2 years.

And the most important high school lesson.....

At Blockbuster, the videos with the blue "Youth Restricted" logo on it is the one you wanted BUT....BUT.....if it's got a picture of some chick in a bikini DO NOT GET IT - it's a mirage. It's fake. It's rigged! Seek out a demure cover. Then - read the description and if it has the words "Explore" or "forbidden" --- yes, there will be - girl on girl - the holy grail since before time and well after.

And yeah, oddly this D student had A's in AP Government and marketing lol.

The rest of it is a blur.

Nope, I'm not a 401K'er. I'm 100% clear and true as to where I stand. My greed is out in the open - not masked with bullshit "15 an hour" and "1%" cries.

Oh, but I do like junk food. It’s just I don’t eat as much of it.

We’ve pretty much limited eating junk food to our time at our cabin up north (what happens up north stays up north)

The problem, of course, is that we spend alot of time up north.
