Sounds like an skilled shooter. Looking around social media, most liberals are condemning the shooting and political violence while quite a few conservatives are calling for retribution against their perceived enemies without knowing anything at all about the shooter or their motivation. So it goes.

200 yards away? You're right, likely a skilled shooter. I just wonder if it's a fellow who wants a splash in the papers before he goes, or if he's actually got an agenda. The condemnations are thick, and I condemn it too, but this time I'm enjoying the dark humor side as a stress relief. We've got rising political violence it seems.

My dad was a native French speaker, and, living in NYC, had access to French media. He used to talk about how chaotic France was, at that time, with ruling coalitions collapsing frequently, leaving the country rudderless, until another coalition could be stitched together.

Yes, I've been watching that. My grandfather was a dentist in the Army, back when they still used horses. He showed my father that before the depression, the number of dentists applying to be in the army was 13, and went to three pages. Bums would fight down by the rail yards, and there was no electricity in rural areas. My father went into the military and applied to go to Medical School. He was on a train platform to go to bombardier school and they pulled him off the platform and sent him to a 3 year Med School in Cincinnati. Can't match that - yet. :)

Just dropping this here. The two photos after the first purport to show the shooter on the roof. I think the shooter is the dark blob behind the ladder in the second roof photo. Just got up 30 minutes ago, still bleary.

There has been lots of speculation about the shooter, hitting the target from 200 yards away.
I would just point out that the shot went through Kirk’s neck, the least likely place for a sniper/shooter to aim. YouTube either go for a headshot or the torso, so still an amazing shot, but not necessarily a bullseye.
Still, I won’t be surprised to find the FBI etc to be looking for someone with a sniper background.

For a medium skilled shooter it's not too hard of a shot. The shooter was shooting down and had to make allowances for wind - that may be why he hit hte neck when he was aiming at the head. Someone up close said Kirk was wearing a bullet vest.

200 yards? I would not call it an easy shot with iron sights. For a very skilled shooter...OK. This person was probably a skilled shooter.

After twenty years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are plenty of skilled and experienced killers on the streets of the US. Oswald was an ex-Marine, whose rating fluctuated between "marksman" and "sharpshooter". And that is before we include people with a fascination with guns, like the guy in Butler, and the Sandy Hook shooter.
But the POTUS has decided to make a case for prosecuting any and all critics of his regime. Ilhan Omar, AOC, and Rashida Tlaib would probably be well advised to assume they will be under 24/7 surveillance, if they were not already. Probably add in Bernie Sanders and John Bolton too. Last year, Bill Barr tried to walk back his comments that Trump can't be allowed near the oval office, by saying the left was a greater threat to democracy.

A trained sniper would be ashamed of that shot. Latest info I have is the shot was from 430 feet. About 140 yards. I was "plinking" soda cans at a shooting range at 100 yards with iron sights (I would hit the cans about every other shot, so 50%) with my dad. At 140 yards, a human sized target wouldn't be that difficult if one is braced. However, I suspect the shooter had a scope and was going for a head-shot. He missed. But it was still effective.
If I were to guess, I'd say it was someone with some hunting experience. The rifle found was a "bolt-action", which would be the choice of a serious hunter. I didn't find any mention -yet- of the caliber, and whether it had a scope. A military sniper would have taken his head off.
