I read that there is a song that I've never heard, by a singer I've never heard of who has had the #1 song for a longer time than anyone else in many years.
I've heard that song, and saw the video. She's a babe, and the video features the cast of Yellowstone, which might account for a big initial boost off the launchpad.
But the song is so average, so unremarkable—it's just nothing special.
Maybe every gigantic hit song was like that when it started out, but for this to be the all-time number-one champ feels like we have a big dreary hole in the culture today. Maybe it has to do with the death of record sales, I really don't know. Do we just gobble up whatever the algorithms send our way now?
What I do know is that when I heard the song, "Choosin' Texas", on the adult-contemporary station in my car all I could think was, "Huh?"
