Our carefully crafted Constitution.
Our coequal and separate three branches of government

I always thought these would be enough to save us from the authoritarianism that has plagued nation states throughout history.

How naive I was.

All it took was one criminally corrupt demagogue, and a complicit Supreme Court and Congress. The role played by a media, large swaths of which are controlled by right wing propagandists, must also be acknowledged.

And then there are the MAGA types that, despite all the evidence of Trump's flaws, would vote for him 3 times. And then proclaim proudly that he is the 'best President this country has ever had', while historians who study the Presidency rate him at the bottom of the barrel. The stupidity is astonishing. And THAT, more than anything else, makes me pessimistic for the future of our Republic.

The intention behind the U.S.'s three branches of government (Legislative, Executive, Judicial) was to prevent tyranny by dividing power, ensuring no single person or group became too strong, and protecting citizens' rights, a lesson learned from British rule. This system, known as the separation of powers, gives each branch distinct roles (make, enforce, interpret laws) and creates a system of checks and balances, where each branch can limit the others, fostering effective governance and liberty.

You'd think the Supreme Court would be ready to push back against Trump's overreach, or that more Republicans in Congress would be in revolt. If and when it comes it may be too little, too late.

Yes our system does have 3 separate and co-equal branches of government (at least on the federal level).

It's working just fine.

As you yourself note, the Supreme Court and Congress seem to agree with a lot of what Trump is trying to do.

Or, in the subjective propagandistic way you frame it (probably got that terminology from whatever you copy pasted your post from), the other two branches of govt. are "complicit."

That just means they have reviewed his actions and agree with them.

That doesn't mean ALL 3 branches of government are wrong.

It means YOU are wrong.

I think most of us are shocked as to what has happened. Nowhere in any class I took, or book I read did it discuss the fragility of "norms", As for the Supreme Court, I found I had thought the problems there were all in the past, and wondered with foreboding what would change with a stacked court. People with principles fired and toadies in their place - everywhere except the Fed so far.
