An interesting hypothetical...what if Europe had to cut out US military hardware to equip itself. This is a wonky in-the-weeds video. Very hardware-nerd. But one basic take-away is that we sell a lot of hardware to Europe, in various forms. And if that is cut-off, it's gonna hurt several segments of our industry.

France comes out pretty well, as does Germany.

the US, in the form of Rubio last week, is demanding that europe continue to buy US armaments and systems. a lost in the noise about "feckless Europeans" is that part of the Nato deal was so that USA could sell its weapons systems to europe and its allies, to defray their own R&D and manuf. costs. This has always been the unspoken quid pro quo.

however, the perception of "kill switches" not just in the F-35 , are pushing europe to reconsider, on top of the perception of US unreliability. (not to mention that no pilots trust the F-35 anyway , and bail out the moment there is an issue)
europe (and perhaps the broader commonwealth ) will move away from the USA weapons systems. Trump has left them no choice...they can only buy time , meantime...

Uhhhh, okay.

However, even with this in mind, it is clear that the F-35 has a significantly smaller incident rate than older jets. Aircraft like the A-10 and the F-16 were lost in their dozens during the first years of their service. However, various reasons – such as secrecy due to the Cold War – prevented the incidents from being widely publicized.

What about fatal crashes? To date, the F-35 has suffered one fatal loss: an F-35A of the Japanese Self Defense Force disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean and the deceased pilot was found later.

The Europeans do not have a 5th gen airframe. The F-35 is the only one out there (since we don't make the F-22 anymore and it was never meant for export anyway).

europe (and perhaps the broader commonwealth ) will move away from the USA weapons systems.

And buy...what? They've largely disarmed themselves over the last 30 years.
