I don't know how much time you spend out in the sun, but my dermatologist is earning a small fortune burning sun damage spots off my bald spot with his nitrogen gun.

Imagine wandering around the desert for god knows how many years, no SPF nuthin', with that bald spot. Covering it makes eminent sense.

Sure, a small yarmulke happens to cover a bald spot resulting in sun damage protection, but if that was the real reason for it it would cover the entire head! Plus, that wasn't the reason for it. From Wikipedia: Kippah - Wikipedia

The Talmud states, "Cover your head in order that the fear of heaven may be upon you."[15] Rabbi Hunah ben Joshua never walked four cubits (6.6 feet (2.0 m)) with his head uncovered, saying "because the Divine Presence is always over my head."[16] This was understood by Rabbi Yosef Karo in the Shulchan Arukh as indicating that Jewish men should cover their heads and should not walk more than four cubits bareheaded.[17] Covering one's head, such as by wearing a kippah, is described as "honoring God".[18] The Mishnah Berurah modifies this ruling by adding that the Achronim established a requirement to wear a head covering even when traversing fewer than four cubits,[19] and even when one is standing still, indoors and outside.[20]
