Good morning this is how I see it. IF Harris wins, we get 8 years of Harris. That shuts out the rest of the potential Dem presidents for another 8 years. IF Trump wins, in 2028 we will have a robust competition for the Dem nomination in 2028. Wes Moore and the others who were, supposedly, on the short list to be VP will be able to compete for the presidential nomination. IF Trump wins, Vance will be aggressively challenged for the republican nomination by Haley, Rubio, DeSantis and at least 5 others in 2028. Which do you suppose 50 % of the voters would prefer? RFK wants to go after the Food Industry and childhood health issues, that's bad? RFK wants to go after social media censorship, that's bad? RFK wants to investigate Big pharma , drug pricing, safety , efficacy, and transparency, are you OK with that? The Dem party had no use for RFK and his issues? Can RFK stay focused? well bud, can that, lie, be prosecuted? Is he a doctor? If you saw no decline in Bidens health that might help to explain why you insisted, I was wrong, and that Joe would be the Dem nominee. That's fine, however, IF Joe had agreed not to run 9 months ago the Dem party could have respected the completive process to nominate the party's candidate. Unfortunately, that never happened.

And that's water under the bridge as we are fielding a primaried candidate who is doing very well in the polls, so the "We the People of the United States of America..." part is fulfilled. They did, but the candidate who was on the ballot decided to withdraw, having the same effect as if he had died or been otherwise incapacitated.

So the convention delegates chose a different candidate, as convention delegates have been doing since the first political convention in the US in 1831, and the bylaws of the Democratic Party make that the final say on who is the party’s nominee.

For the record, it’s possible that no candidate would secure enough delegates on the first ballot, at which time the delegates are then free to vote for different candidates (if they choose) to eventually come up with an official nominee.
