Researchers in the United States are seeking career opportunities abroad as President Donald Trump’s administration slashes science funding and workforce numbers, finds an analysis of Nature’s jobs-board data.
Data from the Nature Careers global science jobs platform show that US scientists submitted 32% more applications for jobs abroad between January and March 2025 than during the same period in 2024. At the same time, the number of US-based users browsing jobs abroad increased by 35%.

The damage is done, and it will persist for decades.
I think that the US will keep much of its existing (older) science and engineering talent, due to inertia. People who are settled in their lives often don't like to move.
But the influx of the world's most talented scientists and engineers to the US has ended. This may be permanent, since we are no longer trusted to welcome foreigers beyond the next election.
The US is also cutting investment in its home-grown science, engineering and education, which is pushing our own talented youth out.
I think the US is committing economic suicide.

My niece just took the Federal buyout. Her entire department at the US F&W is shutting down.
She and her husband (an energy engineer with dual US/Suisse) are moving to Switzerland in September. Two bright, young hard workers in their prime, saying hasta luego New Mexico, Guten Dag Zurich.

Before this, President Biden and many white Liberals wanted to put limits and caps on how many "foreigners" who are talented and educated and ready to do high tech and other such jobs.

My niece just took the Federal buyout.
I just took the plunge too. I was gonna work another 2 years but figured I was likely to get RIF'd (reduction in force, aka fired) in the next couple of months, being a Chief of Staff in an administrative support unit that is "supposedly" a waste of money.
They gave us a stupid, second, generous offer to leave, and who was I to refuse a final bite at the apple? They lost a highly effective, efficient government worker who gave a damn (hundreds of such workers, actually) who had been serving their nation by protecting animal health and the livelihoods of our country's farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers. Good job, DOGE! #Sarcasm.
Last Tuesday was my final workday. I'm out.

Her thought process was the same.... take the check because it beats working under the boot of apparatchiks to the bitter end and getting RIF'd with nothing.

The three smartest minds I know, in my 14 year, late career arc in the intelligence community, have all resigned in the last 90 days. I'm not even looking, and I know of these ones. Someone labeled some of us as being "mine canaries" and if 3 of the 5 on his list left, he was leaving too as it was indicative that things were irretrievably broke. I never asked Kevin who else was on his list, but it was these types. All long term patriots, all reasonable critics of various administrations and dodgy policies, all veterans.
