The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I'm not missing anything. You want to continually blame the United States and its current President for the bad behavior of our erstwhile allies in Europe and elsewhere.
You've made that same point 900 times in several threads so there's no need to rehash it for the 901st time.

? Are you perhaps confusing me with another poster?

I am not blaming the President for the behavior of our allies in Europe, bad or not. I am pointing out that the President's behavior is bad. He makes poor decisions when it comes to international relations, engaging in negative and thoughtless diplomatic blunders that provide no benefit to the U.S. This is not blaming the President for Europe's choices - it's blaming the President for his own terrible diplomacy.

That's why I say you're missing the point. When people criticize the President's international relations, that is not the same as saying that Europe isn't making mistakes with its national defense. Which is why your continued insistence that there are flaws in Europe's national defense priorities is not a counter to the argument that's actually being made. Regardless of whether large NATO countries could or should be doing more to foster their own defense preparedness, the way the President is handling international relations with them is bad. It is leading them to reduce the influence that the US has in the world, to find alternative arrangements between themselves that don't involve allowing the US to assume a leadership role, and to separate themselves from us. Exactly the wrong approach in a world where we're trying to counter increased Chinese power.

If UK has a weak navy, that's the result of their own choices - and it doesn't make it smart or beneficial for the US to start alienating the UK. If Germany is only allocating 2.69% of GDP to military expenditures instead of the 3.0% that we want them to do, that's also the result of their own choices - and it doesn't make it smart or beneficial for the US to damage our alliance with Germany. And saying that is not "blaming the President" for Europe's defense choice - it's properly blaming him for doing damage to our international relations.
