... with a proven record on handling these kinds of things.

The number of people with flu in hospital in England has quadrupled over the past month and is rising "at a very concerning rate", NHS chiefs have warned.
Latest data shows there were 5,000 patients with the virus being treated in hospital at the end of last week - almost 3.5 times higher than the same week in 2023, although not as high as in 2022.

The head of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine told the BBC that pressure on hospitals is "unacceptably awful" and flu is pushing them to breaking point.

News reports and social media posts are warning of a new outbreak of a little-known virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, but officials are yet to confirm this.

Instead, official reports from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that rates of multiple flu-like illnesses are on the rise in China, according to data up to the last week of 2024.

That data suggests that influenza is leading the outbreak, with 30.2 percent of tests coming back positive for it—an increase of 6.2 from the previous week—and 17.7 percent of people hospitalized with a severe respiratory illness testing positive for it.

However, that same dataset indicates that rates of HMPV are ahead of other flu-like diseases—such as COVID-19, rhinovirus and adenovirus—linked to 6.2 percent of positive respiratory illness tests and 5.4 percent of respiratory-illness hospitalizations in China.

WHAT TO KNOW
• H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows with several recent human cases in U.S. dairy and poultry workers.
• While the current public health risk is low, CDC is watching the situation carefully and working with states to monitor people with animal exposures.
• CDC is using its flu surveillance systems to monitor for H5 bird flu activity in people.</

"Latest data shows there were .... that same dataset indicates that ..... official reports indicate that.... News reports and social media posts are warning of...

Sheeesh.

The problems and solution are obvious.

Problem: Compiling data, issuing official reports, letting journos access those reports.

Solution: Emulate Gov. DeSantis and his brilliant Surgeon General, Dr.Joseph Ladopo. Stop compiling data!

No data = no compiling = no official reports = nothing for news reporters to report =

VIOLA!... peace in the valley.

"In Joseph Ladapo, Ron DeSantis doesn't have a surgeon general. He has a fellow conspiracy theorist.Ladapo is DeSantis’ lapdog who was hired to do his political bidding on the state’s dime. Ladapo was picked for the role as the governor’s profile was rising among the far-right conspiracy theory crowds. DeSantis had already attracted widespread attention for his rejection of public health guidance as tens of thousands of Floridians died from Covid.<"

Expect Ladopo to get the call from Elonald if the junkie whose brain is partially consumed by brain MAGAats is not confirmed

Yeah, Desantis should be savvy enough to know that no official reports doesn't satisfy. He should have issued biased reports as necessary, you know like those erroneous FBI crime statistics showing declining crime rates. Provided shelter to the progressive narrative for years, until

FBI Quietly Revised Violent Crime Data, Now Showing Surge Instead Of Reported Decrease

The FBI updated its 2022 crime statistics in September, showing a 4.5% increase in violent crime instead of a 2.1% drop. The change was not announced by the FBI and was based on data from fewer law enforcement agencies than before.

Been following. Someone here posted on a FB group that everyone he knows is sick, but no one I know is sick. All anecdotal, I'm happy the CDC is monitoring it.

Got my flu shot, but I'd also like RSV and Monkeypox vaccine shots. Have to sound out my Doctor. We can't surrender the CDC to the right wing,a and somehow we need to deal with the anti-science. And Rammy is telling us our poor cultures mean we have to import 401k liberals. Go figure.

He should have issued biased reports as necessary, you know like.....

2025! 365 new days to compare apples and oranges, discredit scientists, float conspiracy theories, repeat baseless accusations and ask loaded questions.

" The state government of Ron DeSantis in Florida, which manipulated covid data to show deaths falling during a surge, has agreed to release old data and to publish new covid data, abandoning a two year legal battle to keep the data secret....“The Florida health department lied about the existence of these public records in court and did everything to restrict information and downplay the threat of covid even while the delta variant ripped through Florida—a decision that cost many lives,”

It'll be interesting to see if the incoming right-wing admin can stifle the scientific information such that people cannot make wise decisions in the absence of a sound public health agency.

Florida’s government continues to take positions at odds with national health authorities. The state’s surgeon general Joseph Ladapo, a DeSantis ally, became the only state health leader to recommend against coronavirus vaccination for children and recently urged people aged under 65 to shun booster shots. In March he drew an unprecedented letter of rebuke from the CDC director and FDA commissioner over his misrepresentation of findings in a state sponsored study of vaccine adverse events.

Yes, Il Dapo is who my brother told me to read. Unfortunately, IIRC the gov caused some problems when authorizing the Pfizer vaccine, they included some speculative questions from a pre-print article. The studies weren't done because they were already covered in mounds of data. Ladapo seized on those questions and spun his anti-vaccine narrative.

My brother thinks the vaccines can change your DNA. The response to Ladapo's claims is that there's an absolute ton of evidence that the vaccine, including any particles doesn't enter the nucleus of the cell. So it can float around the cell, inactivated, and while the vaccines are cleared of particles, whatever particles are left don't enter the nucleus.

It was a revelation to me that my brother, an intelligent guy, could be so wrong - and Ladapo provides confirmation bias for his belief.

It seems to take very little for some people to become suspicious of almost everything around them, even if it's nothing new. The US Army holds exercises every four years in Texas, because the terrain and conditions are similar to areas they think they may be deployed to. I think they had done these exercise for forty years, but suddenly people got the idea that Texas was being invaded and people were being hauled off to concentration camps. Weird.

The dumb are more likely to succumb, but springs go sproing in even some of the finest minds.

It's called Nobel Disease, or Nobelitis

It happens when someone has been successful at something in their life, perhaps received some awards, and are then ""...inflicted by excessive pride and self-confidence. There are times when the manifestations of such behaviours demonstrate noticeable signs of narcissism and on extreme cases, hubris.

Linus Pauling is a classic example. Elon Musk another.

Then there are the pure con artists like Trump who are born on 3rd base, but act like they always hit home runs when they cross the plate.
