Britain should consider rejoining the European Union after none of the Leave campaign’s “heady promises” materialised, the man who led the country’s departure from the bloc has said.

Philip Rycroft, former permanent secretary at the Department for Exiting the European Union, said there needs to be a “clear-headed appraisal of what is in the country’s best interests” and that life outside the EU had not lived up to lofty expectations. …

“Most economic analysis suggests that we have taken a significant hit to GDP as a result of leaving the single market,” he added. … “We are seemingly no nearer achieving an immigration policy that commands general consent,” he continued, in reference to the Leave campaign’s promise that leaving the bloc would allow the UK to take back control of its borders. …

“The great promise of a comprehensive trade deal with the USA now seems like an impossible dream,” he said.

“The great promise of a comprehensive trade deal with the USA now seems like an impossible dream,” he said.

There was a piece on the wire, a couple weeks ago, saying the UK wanted to improve relations with the EU. Seems the Brits are catching on to what it's like trying to work with a USian "JC".

Both sides need to reunify.

EU is a loser.

they are in midst of control-alt-delete of sorts.

Seems the Brits are catching on to what it's like trying to work with a USian "JC".

Many decades of 'special relationship' (prominently referred to in countless James Bond movies) gone down the drain.

UK's Parliament recognizes somberly:

The report concludes that the UK must reframe its relationship with the US and dismiss previous sentimentality about a “special relationship”. While the US remains a close ally, its strategic and political priorities mean that future relations with the UK will be far more transactional and interest based. The UK must therefore rebalance its approach towards the US—collaborate where it can but also hedge where it must in recognition of a partnership that remains vital but less predictable. This will include working with partners and strengthening the UK’s capacity to act without US support where feasible.

For those who missed this bit on the wire yesterday:

US may withdraw Falklands support as King Charles visits

A confidential Pentagon email revealed the US is weighing a review of its support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. The proposal is reportedly part of a suite of measures to punish NATO allies, including the UK, for not backing the US-led war in Iran. Options discussed also target other European overseas territories, underscoring a broader strategic shift in Washington’s approach to alliance politics.

Of course, Trump the Conqueror, sucking up to Argentina, may net him a base in the Falklands that controls access to Cape Horn, so he can extort more "tolls", to anyone trying to avoid the exorbitant tolls at the overcrowded Panama Canal, which the Pirate King also controls.

Do ships still sail around Cape Horn?
AI Overview
Yes, ships still sail around Cape Horn, but it is no longer a regular commercial route. Today, it is primarily used by cruise ships, luxury expeditions, and yachts (often for tourist travel, like Quark Expeditions), yachts, or specialized vessels that cannot fit through the Panama Canal.

Key Details on Modern Navigation

Purpose: It is now seen as an adventure or a way to visit Antarctica rather than a necessary trade route.

Commercial Use: While rare, some ultra-large, fully laden cargo ships or tankers (like Capesize vessels) might use this route, though many prefer the safer, shorter Strait of Magellan, according to some Quora users.

Navy Ships: Some, including U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, use the route, as mentioned in a

Reddit discussion.

Hazardous: Despite modern technology, the area remains dangerous, with severe weather, high waves, and potential icebergs.

Sailing: The last commercial cargo-carrying sailing vessel rounded the horn in 1949, and it is now entirely in the realm of tourism or adventure racing, say sources like this YouTube video.

Alternatives
Panama Canal: The primary route for almost all ocean-going trade between the Atlantic and Pacific.

Strait of Magellan: A popular, safer alternative to Cape Horn that is still hazardous but far better than the open ocean.

Panama Canal: The primary route for almost all ocean-going trade between the Atlantic and Pacific.

See my previous post about how tolls in the Canal are not by a fixed schedule anymore. Access is auctioned, and the going price has increased ten-fold, since Hormuz closed. That will start making the Cape look economic.

Strait of Magellan: A popular, safer alternative to Cape Horn that is still hazardous but far better than the open ocean.

A base in the Falklands would control access to the Strait as well.

We old phartz remember when Suez was closed, by the 67 war. Egypt did not regain control of the east bank, until after the 73 war. Then they had to clear scuttled ships and unexploded ordinance from the Canal. The net sifter says the Canal finally reopened on June 5, 1975.

God and Savior Trump, Master of Oil, is nearly 80 years old. He probably doesn't care much what happens more than ten years from now, so a Hormuz shut down as long as the Suez shutdown, would probably suit him fine.
