I have to again start off by commending Manlobbi on such a wonderful recreation of the look and feel of the old Fool Boards. A great job well done!

In that spirit, I'd like to ask for a feature that I found incredibly useful on the TMF Boards - and one that I didn't realize was so useful until it was absent from this version.

On TMF, if you clicked onto a particular board, it would display the various posts starting with the last post you had read on the board. If you clicked onto the board heading from your favourites (for example), it would provide a list of twenty posts - but the first post on top would always be the last post you had read. If after reading a post you then clicked on the board title, it took you to the same place - that last post you read would be the first post in chronological posts.

It's almost like a bookmark. Click on a board, and it takes you to where you left off - the posts you've read are "off screen," and it starts with the first post you have yet to read.

That's not how this site is currently set up. If I click on a board, the posts shown start at what appears to be a semi-random point. Many of the posts on that first page are ones that I've read - I have to click "next" (sometimes more than once) to get to the first page where unread posts start.

Is there a way to change this back to the Boards 1.0 configuration?

Thank you Albaby for your kind words.

On TMF, if you clicked onto a particular board, it would display the various posts starting with the last post you had read on the board. If you clicked onto the board heading from your favourites (for example), it would provide a list of twenty posts - but the first post on top would always be the last post you had read.

That sounds right. The TMF board paid attention to the lost read and re-navigated based on that. That was confusing also as you had to go back to see past posts that you had missed and they wouldn't even appear on the arrival page with the last post shown alone, but we got used it to.

There isn’t a perfect way and each has pros and cons.

Regarding navigating around posts at Shrewd'm, when returning to a board it retains exactly the same navigation position (the last post number shown at the top of the list when viewing the board) that you were last at. This approach is pretty elegant as you come back just as you had left the board, so you don't any miss posts.

(If post No. 5006 was shown at the top of the list, and you leave and come back months later, you will still see post No. 5006 as the top of the list. Other new posts will later be below it, and you don’t automatically jump past them.)

That also fits the culture of the board being part news-paper, part-library, part-this-moment. There is possibly a disproportional emphasis on this-moment these days.

The way this board navigates is clean; you never miss a post as we did before (for example, before if you read just the last post - missing some earlier unread posts, and then leave, and arrive back - then the navigation location suddenly changed to only show just the post you viewed and earlier unread posts were missed. We got used to it, but that doesn’t mean it was as good as how this board works).

This board doesn’t even record which post you have read - I prefer the system to not know and like that fact also.

I wrote a similar post to this on the Berkshire board explaining the navigation last year. Since then I also added options to jump by month, year and decade also using the green buttons.

Now I understand why sometime it would take me to a page where I had already read all the posts and I had to click Next to see the new post.

The posts I have already read, the links are highlighted differently by the browser. For me, brown for visited and blue for not.
This works quite well.
