I left India 30 years ago and don't really follow Indian politics. But this year's election was quite interesting. Bloomberg has a good article on it:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-06-05...Modi is India's Trump, like such luminaries in other countries like Orban in Hungary or Dueterte in Philippines. He tried every trick inspired by Trump. He made Indian Muslims "the other" like Teump and immigrants. Told Hindus that if he wasn't voted in, Muslims would snatch Hindu women's wedding necklaces from their throats. Said he was God's incarnation. Had hundreds of photographers film him as he "meditated" at the Southernmost tip of India where the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal meet. Erected a billion dollar Ram temple at Ayodhya (Rama's birthplace) where Hindus had torn down a Muslim mosque in 1992. Basically tried to arouse Hindu fervor as hard as he could to distract from the fact that he is selling the country to two billionaires, Adani and Ambani, from his state. The opposition was and is a joke, with an incompetent leader of the main party, and a motley coalition of regional parties strong in one state or with one segment of population. With all that he lost 20% seats compared to the last election, and lost absolute majority. He will still be PM but hopefully a humbled one.
The average uneducated Indian voter seems to be smarter than the average voter in USA #1 best country.
