That assumes the market will eventually be higher than it is right now. Not too safe a bet for the foreseeable future I'm afraid.

There's only 3 PEOPLE you should listen to in this situation and I speak with the most cocksure state of mind I can:
*Jay Powell
*Warren Buffett.
*Wzambon
That's it.
These are the 3 entities who know, or have a quality clue as to what to do.

I believe this is called being "mugged by reality".

Umm, "innovative tactics"?
The ECONOMIST: If you failed to spot America being “looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far” or it being cruelly denied a “turn to prosper”, then congratulations: you have a firmer grip on reality than the president of the United States. It’s hard to know which is more unsettling: that the leader of the free world could spout complete drivel about its most successful and admired economy. Or the fact that on April 2nd, spurred on by his delusions, Donald Trump announced the biggest break in America’s trade policy in over a century — and committed the most profound, harmful and unnecessary economic error in the modern era.
FINANCIAL TIMES: If it endures, Donald Trump's decision on April 2 2025 to enact sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs on US trade partners will go down as one of the greatest acts of self-harm in American economic history.

Eighteen years ago I would have traded it...
No more. Simply looking to hold on to what I have. Hedged to keep losses at a minimum.
Stepping into the arena used to be fun. Probably still would be.
But I'm too old and too slow, so stepping out of the arena with empty pockets is not on my dance card today.

All political mud wrestling aside I make my point this way:

FINANCIAL TIMES: If it endures, Donald Trump's decision on April 2 2025 to enact sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs on US trade partners will go down as one of the greatest acts of self-harm in American economic history.
Even if it doesn't endure... even if Trump reverses course completely.... the damage is already done.
Not only to the markets, but to our reputation as a leader of the free world and as a partner that can be trusted.
This will truly go down in history as "one of the greatest acts of self-harm". In addition it will go down in history as "one of the greatest acts of harming others for no rational reason".
The world has already been moving away from the USD as a reserve currency. This will accelerate the process. Why should people view the dollar as the world's reserve currency, when the United States seems embarked on a path of self-destruction? We have enjoyed the premium given to a reserve currency for decades.... lower prices, good exchange rates. Prepare for that to change as we accelerate our decline to second tier status.
Who wants to make deals with a double dealing, irrational United States? Who wants to be in mutual defense treaties with a country that launches trade wars against... everybody, including them, (except Russia)?
How will the world view us? Think of how the city of New York views Donald Trump.
That is our future.
Donald Trump has had a seductive vision for many. Basically, it can be reduced to the metaphor of a lifeboat. The lifeboat holds the United States, Australia, the EU, Korea...Japan, etc. etc....basically any country willing to abide by a few simple rules about democratic decision making.
Suddenly, the United States begins berating the other rowers in the boat. You're rowing too slowly.. Over there, Italy has taken a break from the rowing and is drunk and slumped over his oar... and you guys over there are picking too many people out of the water and will swamp the boat..... so fuck you guys.... and the United States jumps out of the boat and starts swimming toward the shore... but the shore is over the horizon somewhere.... and the sharks begin to gather.... Wait a minute.. I thought the sharks in these waters were friendly sharks..... Meanwhile, the rowboat is filled with folks who have a sudden jolt of rededication to the goal of rowing toward shore... and is moving off into the distance.
Such is our current state, and we may soon find out that our resources to deal with our current state are not all that "exceptional". We do have the option of blowing the whole thing up, but that's not really an option (except that some watery version of it might occur to our intrepid captain, just the option of flooding the Berlin subways occurred to Adolf Hitler during his last days in his bunker)
Given that this state of affairs has dumped all of us into the water... MAGA and non-MAGA alike, perhaps its time we figure out a way to survive this mess together.
The metaphor has its limitations, to be sure.... all metaphors have such limitations... but there's enough here to say "To those who have ears, let them hear"
Live by the seductive vision... die by the seductive vision.
Or take seriously the fact that we're all in this together and can't really afford to be berating each other any longer.
Long and slow process. There will be no immediate successes. Whether we wanted to or not, we're on the hard path now.

Said the completely hypocritical and delusional Jedi. Thinks he can dance and fool everyone. Well, we are coming up to the time where you'll have to come up with more characters because you voted for this. And all those claims you have of seeing everything waaaayyy in advance and all the 401k libs are foolishly stupid and aren't as advanced as Jedi who is the mystic truth seer.
How come you voted for this then? He said he was gonna do this.

And Powell is saying that inflation will be more persistent, i.e. it's gonna continue (after having abated the past two years).
If your thesis is correct, that will doom Reps in 2026 and 2028, just as it doomed Harris.

"I don't expect a turn in the market until Joe Kernan says "dead cat bounce" on seven days and spins widdershins in his chair"
I pulled a lot of money ( to me ) out of stocks in January and February, and even as late as
March. I'm trying to wrap my head around what will prompt me to take the money out of fixed income that matures each month, and put it back in stocks ( mostly etf's, but I dabble in individual stocks ).
Trump could come back from another of his golf long weekends, and on Monday declare that hey
all tariffs are off the table, I was just messin with y'all. And businessmen the World over
will say to themselves: I don't give a rip what that a$$hole says, he'll probably change
his mind in 24-48 hours and put tariffs back on, or hatch a scheme even dumber. So that would
not get me to reinvest ( and for businessmen to make any type of capital outlays ).
One thing that would get my attention would be Congress growing a collective pair and start
to assert the power that they have. But MAGA Congress critters have shown themselves to be
spineless Yes men and women. There is not much the Dems can do, and I'm not seeing or hearing
about any Dems mounting any type of bipartisan strategy to reel Trump in ( mot blaming them,
not much they can do besides rhetoric ). So while Congressional action would get my attention,
It would not prompt me to invest in stocks. And I'd guess that businessmen the world over would
need to see some real teeth in any Congressional actions before they'd start sinking cash into
any type of expansion or growth.
So I don't see anything until mid-terms approach that will cause people to get back into stocks.
I'm not saying there won't be rallies, dead-cat bounces, things like that. The cratering of
market values will ease, but I see no reason why they don't just stay down for an extended, unknown amount of time.
And other than seeing the numbers in their accounts shrink, Americans haven't really felt any pain yet. This is not Covid, and his bungled, ham-fisted handling of that. Americans can still do what they please. But we are going to feel these tariffs in our pocketbooks, day to day living costs are going up. Unfortunately, that is probably what a large # of Americans need to feel on a very personal level before they pull away from Trump.

As an aside, I know that some Americans have felt the Trump pain already. Gov workers forced
out by Musk and DOGE, I have no doubt there are others. But the vast majority of the folks
who voted this nutjob into power haven't felt the consequences yet. But it's coming, for
all of us.

But it’s coming for all of usThen all of us should be getting off our butts and meeting the moment.
As a start (and ONLY as a start) may I suggest one of the hundreds of protests that will be occurring across the country tomorrow, Saturday, April 5th. See link below to find a protest near you. Find out that you’re not alone
Then get involved. Donate your time and/or resources to any number of worthy causes, directly or indirectly addressing the monumental task before us.
Paralysis never sat well with me, or, I suspect, with most of you. Powerlessness is an attitude this regime prefers we submit. Don’t submit to it.

We were at the Rochester rally. Between 3 and 4 thousand protesters per the local news. Yes, it was huge. Couldn’t even see the whole crowd.
Great fun and invigorating. My sign got quite a few laughs. Lots of other great signs. Nice to be among so many people that still believe in democracy.

“We went knowing that we were accomplishing nothing more than the feeling that we were not alone.”
All these local events had to be organized, and the surprisingly large turnout around the country might inspire more people to become locally active. I think this will prove to be far more effective from a movement perspective than one giant DC rally.

We went knowing that we were accomplishing nothing more than the feeling that we were not alone. But it's a great start. I'm reminded that there is a "3.5 rule" about popular movements: that proportion of the population that can affect change. That's
still a lot of people in the US, about 12 million people, but I can easily see that number of people organizing and protesting, and probably sooner than later.

Actually, Mrs. Davis was one of too many speakers, but at least I could hear him speaking (didn’t wear hearing aids because the crowd noise levels were high plus I wanted to annoy Ms. Wolf by keep saying “What?”).
Lotsa pictures of the crowd..spot yourself in any of the pictures?
Sadly, no. After all, there were 4,000 people there. My sign did not mention Trump or Musk by name, but so many people took pictures of it that Ms. Wolf got jealous and made me walk home.
