Now he's complaining about Schumer and Biden's treatment of Bibi.

The same Bibi who smirked as he got the US Embassy in Jerusalem for nothing in return.

The same Bibi who didn't give no shits about President Obama - and despite Obama's wishes had both parties assembled in Congress.

Well President Trump- Bibi was gracious enough to call Biden to congratulate him on the election while you were still saying 'rigged'.

Yeah, carry his water.

Another mule.

And this mule has been kicked multiple times from multiple angles and still doesn't get it.

Too bad - get could own the electoral college otherwise.

Trump totally gets it.

He wins far more votes by positioning himself in support of Israel (relative to Biden) than he would the other way. Opposition to Israel's current policies and tactics skews heavily progressive - Trump's landing on the correct side of that skew for his brand.

Again, not everyone who supports Israel is doing it just because they want to advance Israel's interests. For a whole lot of political actors, it is in their best interests to support Israel.

It's going to take more cycles I guess.

The same people who used to shout "I'm a Free Trader" on the Right....are now as Anti Nafta as us perotistas and Buchananites were back when they shouted us down.

Right now they shout "Israel!" - maybe one they that'll get old too.

By not kissing the Israeli Killing Machine's butt - Trump would lose very few people. Not too many red hats are gonna go to Biden for *any* reason - including this one.

However, he'd exploit some of the Arabic vote, in electoral rich Michigan.

Just like trade and immigration....I'll have to wait a few more cycles. I accept that.

They usually come around :)

In the meantime, sympathies to the enlisted and us civilians. We'll die for things that had nothing to do with us.

Buy stock in the yellow ribbon factories until we smarten up.

These is a third reason for those who support Israel....

... because it advances the interests of the USA.

This third segment is the largest by far, IMHO

There is something else he doesn’t get:

A $500,000,000 bond to keep his properties from being taken in judgement of his loss in court last month. They’ve approached 30 companies, according to his lawyers. So far: nada.

Guess the brand isn’t what it used to be, eh?

None of the Arabic vote is going to switch to Trump based on anything Trump does, either. Or the progressive vote. They're not going to believe that Trump is going to champion the Palestinian cause. He's much better off squeezing Biden on the pro-Israel side. Especially since that's where his actual position was through most of the time he was in office - he was squarely on the side of trying to normalize and integrate Israel without advancing a two-state solution for the Palestinians.

It sounds like you think that U.S. foreign policy shouldn't be as supportive of Israel. Even if that were true, it doesn't necessarily mean that it would therefore be better for Trump to be less supportive of Israel.

How?
The Hamas fans who live around Detroit aren't going to pull the lever for Trump and neither will the Antifa-protestor types who are currently shouting "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".

Nah, the best strategy here is praise Biden for helping Israel out and noting areas where he's wobbly.

Or how about...the most obvious reason to support Israel?

Because it's the right thing to do.

I agree, but I get the impression from Wilton's posts that he doesn't believe it is the right thing to do. Which, I think, is one reason why he characterizes U.S. officials that support Israel as being treated like Israel's "mule," rather than pursuing a policy that they believe is the correct one. But even if you don't think it's the right thing to do, you can still recognize that it might very much be in the US' interests - or in DJT's interests - to support Israel's current policies.

I just saw a note which I thought worth passing along.

You know who has $500 million available?

Taylor Swift

OK, it made me laugh. Can’t help myself sometimes.

It would be a lot easier to support Israel if they weren't violating international law prior to the October attacks. They have annexed land that is not theirs, razed Palestinian homes, and built their own "settlements". That certainly does not justify the October attacks, but one can at least understand how many non-Israelis would be resentful. (And, I believe, a lot of Israelis also don't support that policy. But it continues anway.)

In Gaza, they have a sticky problem. They want Hamas, and they have every right (IMO) to pursue and destroy them. But Hamas hides among civilians, and killing civilians isn't cool. Sort of like us in Vietnam, and us again in Afghanistan. (Though Vietnam can't really be argued to have been justified...we were meddling in someone else's civil war**.)

**Yes, that's an oversimplification. But in general terms, that is what it boiled down to. We could go into French colonialism, Dulles, and such, but that just gets us deeper in the weeds without any real benefit to this discussion.

There are no settlements in Gaza. Not one. Haven't been any in years.
At any rate, none of that justifies what Hamas did; the Israelis are rightly acting in self-defense.

I wasn't talking specifically about Gaza. That's where Hamas is, but -as you say- not where the settlements are. But there are settlements in lands the Israelis don't "own", and they displaced a lot of non-Israelis to build them. I also said that this doesn't justify the October attacks. Just to be clear (as if I weren't clear the first time).

Guess the brand isn’t what it used to be, eh?

Gold plated toilets and sneakers only get ya so far...

The hatred and fear Trump generates in his speeches has to be, at some point, exhausting... even for his evangelical cohort.

Well, maybe not for his evangelical cohort. After all, they've been waiting for how many centuries for the 2nd coming?
