I imagine they don't believe he's a danger to our democracy. Right-wing populist demagogues are being elected in western democracies all over the globe, and part of democracy is that the electorate is allowed to choose to elect right-wing demagogues if they want to. Doing so isn't a danger to our democracy, though it is a certainly an awful choice to make IMHO. If enough people want to support a horrible candidate because they want to see the liberals cry, then that person will get elected.
