I haven't been a football fan since high school, so forgive me if I rant about this latest escapade. Not that there's anything new here, we've been over it a hundred times but'
If I see one more post on Facebook thanking God or Jesus for saving Damar Hamlin's life I'm going to go find them and drag them to the nearest 50 yard line. Seriously. God couldn't have stepped in 30 second earlier and stopped the whole thing in its tracks?
And, for the record, it's doctors and nurses, ambulance drivers and team trainers who saved his life. Is it so hard to come up with a meme that says something like that, instead of 'Thank you Jesus'?

Co-signed. It was a big week in the NFL so there was lots of news in general, but people kept interjecting how they were praying for Hamlin. Praying does exactly zip. Medical science saved his life.
As an aside, this is yet another example how the popularity of this sport does not reflect well on our species at all. The game is pretty savage. Players have been paralyzed and even killed before and plenty more have be disabled in one form or another for life, all in the name of entertainment. Pretty messed up. And I say this as a big NFL fan.

AND incredibly rapid response time. Without that, all the medical science in the world would not have been able to intervene successfully.

I read that there is a significant medical staff on standby at the stadium for every game. Something like 20 people, just in case.
Yeah, that saved his life. Apparently he was released from the hospital (I just checked). So it looks like he'll be OK.
Not a football fan anymore. Haven't been for many years. I was when I was younger, but have lost interest. I knew a lot of parents that wouldn't let their kids play football because of the dangers, which is why soccer (real football!) is gaining popularity. A much less hazardous team sport. I speculate that may be why men's US soccer is getting better...more kids are growing up playing. So the US men's actually made the World Cup last year (they lost, but made a surprisingly good showing).

Hey, don't mess with my religion!

It is savage.
I saw a program on after-football. I think it was Ken Otto required half an hour just to get out of bed because of knee problems. They also discussed TBIs, and I think it was a Seahawk linebacker that killed himself possibly due to TBI.
When you've got 280lb guys that can run a 4.4 40yd dash, that's some serious kinetic energy. IMO, you're crazy to play that game today. When I was a fan, they weren't that big. I don't think Fran Tarkenton was much bigger than me. Linemen were maybe 230lb. Modern QBs are that big now.

I came close to buying a surfboard being advertised on Craigslist by Donald Takayama's surfboard shop in Oceanside. It was a custom order made for Junior Seau, a close friend of Donald's. I saw them in the water occasionally over the years... a happy guy who seemed to love everything...smiled a lot.
Junior was a Chargers linebacker, much loved in San Diego. Some say trading him was the beginning of the end for the team in San Diego.
"Say Ow"
Despite owning a successful restaurant near the stadium and enjoying an exalted post-career status in San Diego he was overcome by depression. He ended it, before the board he ordered was finished, with a shotgun blast to his chest so that his brain would be intact for research.
I called the shop, got the lowdown on Junior's new custom board, and passed on it. Too sad.
That's when I lost all interest in football.

So sad, so powerful! I'd been a fan of his when he played. And I knew he had health problems eventually, due to concussions. But I didn't realize he had taken his life, and with the awareness of preserving his brain for research.

While we are on the topic of savagery, ESPN used to have a show called Jacked Up! where they would top five biggest hits of the week and scream "JACKED UP!" when a player would get creamed. Which is pretty bad just on its own.
In hit #3 in this video, the hit player crumples to the ground and raises his arms. The announcer yells "Just look at his arms up and you know he got'JACKED UP!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ELj-79jbqAIndeed, he got jacked up. That arm motion is called a fencing response, which is an involuntary reaction to being concussed. Not really something that should be
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fencing_responseThe sport has gotten less savage and ESPN has canceled Jacked Up! since the CTE issue came around. But there is still some work to do. This season QB Tua Tagovailoa was hit after throwing the ball. He gets up, begins to stagger and falls to the ground (about the 25 second mark). He was taken off the field and examined, and the team concluded he had a back injury. The number of people who believed that is very close to, if not actually zero. He was concussed again later in the season and this time the team wisely kept him off the field for the rest of the season.

I saw the board listed on craigslist at Donald Takayama's surf shop in Oceanside CA, so I called the shop.
Junior, an avid surfer, was a close friend of Donald's. Donald was a very good board shaper. I had one of his popular midsize boards.
I called the shop and Donald told me Junior ordered a custom longboard, a noserider, but, before it was finished, he shot himself in the chest with a 12 gage shotgun so his brain would be available for research.
I never found out what, or if if Seau's brain was studied but I decided it would be too morbid to buy the board.
