This is such a massively winning issue. Watch the GOP mess it up:

Actually, that isn't new. Ducey, while governor, did the same thing. The NG went home in Sept. Now, in Dec, Hobbs is -in essence- renewing that order. Which, for a blue governor in a mostly red state, was also a good move politically.

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/ariz...

The Biden administration's decision to close that port [Lukeville] earlier this month, citing the need for Customs and Border Protection staffers elsewhere,...

Note that "they were needed elsewhere", implying that there are not enough resources to staff Lukeville and "elsewhere". Congress controls the purse-strings. They need more people. There are also some calls for immigration reform from AZ congresscritters. Again (it's not like this is a new thing).

People in FL or OK or other non-border areas may complain, but we actually live it. In all its nuances.

She's definitely breaking with the White House orthodoxy, which has been to encourage a wide open southern border.

Biden doesn't want to hire enforcement officers (the guys that deport people). He wants to hire processing people (the guys that rubber stamp the amnesty applications and release them into the US knowing they'll never appear in court). There's a big difference between the two.

For starters. You actually have to train a border patrol agent, so you can't just go out and hire a bunch of dudes.

I dispute the characterization. He does not want to "throw open the southern border". He has rescinded the less humane measures Trump implemented, and is calling on Congress to enact reform. There is also the Dignity Act of 2023, which is both bipartisan, and is a little reform. I'd be surprised if Biden doesn't sign it (assuming it reaches his desk). It's not perfect, but it's a start.**

Yes, you have to train border patrol agents. Once you hire them, and start paying them. That is the tricky bit when Congress (especially the red side of the aisle) wants to cut everyone's budgets.

**Why does Congress always have to do things piecemeal? Just knuckle-down and overhaul the whole system in one shot. A lot of times, some measures don't work without other measures in tandem, but they won't pass those tandem measures at the same time.

He already has. This isn't in dispute.

That's 2021. The highest in almost a hundred years. It's gotten worse since then.

He has rescinded the less humane measures Trump implemented, and is calling on Congress to enact reform.

Trump's policy was Remain in Mexico.

There would be zero democrat support for say, adopting Canada's immigration policies. I know that because it was tried when Trump was President.
There is zero appetite among democrats for anything less than a full amnesty and a general rush of new democrat voters. (Other than the realization of, "Oh, crap. We've gone too far,".)

And here's what's coming to a border state near you:

I'm amazed that Washington's odious governor, the execrable Jay Inslee, has so far managed to avoid having busloads of migrants sent right up to Seattle.

Trump's policy was Remain in Mexico.

That sounds so benign, but it wasn't. Even Ivanka said (reportedly) "Dad, you can't do this to people."

Of course illegal immigration soared in 2021. COVID was getting under control, things were opening up, and jobs were available again. That's really the draw. Eliminate that draw, and you eliminate probably 90% of the problem.

As for "new democrat voters", that wouldn't happen. Most of those people for Central and South America are Catholic. Usually very devout. Very conservative. If the Reps would take a more reasonable stance on immigration, they'd have loads of support from Latino people. That's the ONE thing that drives them to support Dems. Everything else they are more or less aligned with Reps.
