am trying to balance paranoia with data driven expectations, but not much public grist out there other than generic conclusions from gov internal terrorist trackers.
in 2024, there is a bigger spotlight on the pseudo/quasi militia MAGA groups out there. how realistic is it that in a close presidential election (and hopefully pollsters are wrong again), the country experiences a much broader set of violent events than jan.6 ?
such groups commonly believe trump actually has some sort of legal and\or 'christian' authority to give them arms'-length approval for outright violence. (even interpretation of such via codewords is sufficient; none expect explicit orders from trump to commit murder)
take for example the name of a rightwing group 'condition one', which is based on the gun culture phrase for having ammo chambered (i.e., an interpretation of stand up\stand by).
if this comes to pass, will it be organized and directed at law enforcement, or chaotic and mostly at random unarmed people?
[for any interested, wired magazine seems to cover this topic regularly]
ironic green day poll : paranoid or stoned?

If I had to guess, Trumpy wackos will target unarmed local Democrats like mayors or election volunteers. They don't have the balls to go after law enforcement (and also because LEOs are natural allies in Trumpians' minds).
Instead of one Ashley Babbit, if on Jan 6 the LEOs had ruthlessly massacred 400-500 people storming the Capitol, this problem would have been nipped in the bud. Nobody would try that stunt again. But US is (thankfully) not Russia or China.

They didn't have to use deadly force, at least initially. Tear gas and rubber bullets should suffice.
If it didn't, then storming the doors is when you use live rounds. As was done in one case (lady air force person pushing her way through the door or window (forget which)). Instead, one officer died from injuries sustained at the hands of the rioters. A few others died, also, though mostly of medical conditions (a heart attack or two, etc). In the following months a few LEOs committed suicide, and some people count them among the casualties of Jan 6.
But I think tear gas and rubber bullets would have thinned the crowd enough that there probably wouldn't have been any fatalities from violence. Restraint is a very good thing, but at some point you have to take the gloves off.

Should Trump win, a lot of US Cities will catch fire.
Even better, there will be posters here cheering it on.

"Should Trump win, a lot of US Cities will catch fire.

Nobody behaviorally projects as much as a Trump nutter cultist. No one.
When Trump lost the 2020 election and then he sent his cult to the Capital on January 6th, Dope was initially one of the biggest defenders of the insurrectionists. He made all sorts of excuses for them and tried to portray them to be just the people who peacefully protested at the BLM marches. He was also one of the loudest voices trying to make a hero out of Ashley Babbitt and a villain out of the police officer who was trying to project lawmakers from a crowd chanting about lawmaker's deaths and shot Babbitt when she disobeyed a direct command to stay out of the broken window she was trying to climb through to get to the lawmakers.

OK, Dope, how about if Biden wins? What y'all gonna do this time?

Hopefully 60's Chicago is the benchmark.
Either way, I love how you people are now openly speaking about political violence.
Sort of like the weather!

One more I was right about and a gift that still has so much to give.
When it's normalized, it'll be yet another victory.

...yet. But just give Trump a second chance and he'll take care of that.

Dope, hoping for a pogrom against "you people", Should Trump win, a lot of US Cities will catch fire."
If Convict Trump the Revenger wins, a few riots would be nothing compared to what Project 25 will do to the US and the world.
The time and money Trump wasted having Hillary Clinton investigated will look like chump change. Recall that the "Department of Justice under Jeff Sessions launched a sprawling investigation of Clinton’s tenure at the State Department and the Clinton Foundation that, after more than two years of searching, turned up exactly nothing, with no recommendation for criminal charges."
That long list of Trump's associates who have kissed the ring, and those who have been indicted and/or convicted will make the Marvel comic book list of villains come to life. Bannon Stone Gates Manafort Papadapolous etc etc etc.

This is not something I want to see in my declining years. I would rather not wonder whether democracy is being pushed over a cliff and wonder if we can recover. There's no guarantee we recover if it happens, and just how often are we going to be pushed to the cliff edge? Well, as the Chinese say, may you live in interesting times.

Given current technology, if we lose democracy we likely will never get it back. Just look at China. They have a 1984-like surveillance apparatus. No one can do anything without government knowing about it. I very much doubt they will ever be free. Same with DPRK. Not without external intervention, which would possibly result in global conflagration. If we lose it, and authoritarianism takes-hold, it's over. Whomever comes out on top will have the technology for crowd control, kick-ass weapons, and the capability for complete surveillance to head off any insurrection or rebellion before it can go anywhere.
The only thing preventing that is stable institutions that respect the rule of law. If those go, we're screwed.
